SRINAGAR: The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced a delay in the by-poll for Anantnag Assembly seat for which the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti is likely to contest to secure a berth in the House.
The ECI decided to postpone the election after the J&K government informed it the law and order situation in south Kashmir was “not conducive” for polls, an official communiqué said here.
The commission said the chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, BR Sharma, had informed it that due to certain recent incidents, the law and order situation “is not conducive at the moment for holding the bye-election”.
He had requested the commission to postpone the by-election, it said.
The seat fell vacant after the death of former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on January 7. The by-poll were scheduled for May 16.
