CS takes stock of garbage disposal at Achan

Srinagar: Chief Secretary BR Sharma on Monday took stock of garbage disposal and management at Achan landfill site of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
He was accompanied by Commissioner SMC Bashir Ahmed Khan, Chief Executive Officer ERA, and various senior Municipal and ERA officers.
The main purpose of his visit was to take a stock of the garbage disposal of the second landfill cell in operation.
Sharma directed the SMC and ERA to take up the construction of third land fill site at an earliest. “Both the departments shall work in tandem to complete the entire process within three months time and keep the cell ready before the second operating cell gets exhausted,” Sharma said.
Commissioner SMC Bashir Ahmed Khan apprised the Chief Secretary about various scientific steps being taken up for improvisation of garbage management and various methods to be adopted for reduction of stench at the site.
“SMC besides adopting various scientific methods for garbage disposal and stench reduction is focused to beautify the surroundings of landfill site,” informed Commissioner SMC.
Chief Secretary said that instructions will be passed to divisional administration to initiate legal action against miscreants trying to disrupt garbage disposal at Achan.
Sharma also interacted with the locals of Achan and assured them that the best possible methods would be adopted to keep the site free of dirt, stench and other affected effluents.
“An up to the mark landfill site will be maintained that shall ensure a clean and fresh environment to the people living in the vicinity and make it people friendly,” Sharma said.
Meanwhile the enforcement squad of SMC has launched an extensive anti encroachment drive from Dalgate upto Nishat and Shalimar Gardens.
“The encroacher’s through public addressing system have been warned to vacate from the encroached spaces which causes inconvenience to the pedestrians and hinders traffic movement,” a SMC statement said.
“We have already started full time vigilance on encroachments particularly in busy market areas and Dalgate is one of them where some chronic encroachments had come up in the past,” said Chief Enforcement Officer Syed Nisar.
