Anantnag/ Baramulla: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in a gunfight with government forces in Gadoora village of Pulwama district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Bilal Ahmad Bhat of Karimabad, Pulwama.
Clashes erupted in the village during the encounter between police and hundreds of youths who were making efforts to help the militants, cornered by the government forces, escape.
The youths tried to divert the attention of the forces by pelting them with stones and by marching towards the site where militants were exchanging fire with the government forces comprising police and army. However, police dispersed them by firing dozens of teargas canisters.
During the clashes several youth suffered injuries. A doctor at district hospital Pulwama said eight injured people were brought to the hospital and all of them were discharged after treatment.
“None of them had a grave injury,” a doctor told Kashmir Reader. Sources said some policemen also suffered injuries in the clashes.
The gunfight and clashes near the encounter site were on till late in the night.
A police official who was a part of operation, requesting anonymity, said that they have tightened the cordon around the village to ensure that militants do not escape.
“Nothing can be said about how many militants are inside,” the police official said.
Meanwhile, the government forces launched an operation against a group of militants in Kupwara forests after a brief gunfight.
Official reports said that government forces including army’s 28 RR and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir police launched an operation against a group of militants in forest areas along the Dardpora village in Lolab valley of north Kashmir’s district Kupwara.
Srinagar-based army spokesperson Lt Col NN Joshi told Kashmir Reader that searches are being conducted over a vast area that has been cordoned off.
There is no firing from either side after the first contact, he added.
Also, a live hand grenade was found near a nallah in Kralpora area of Kupwara district, which was later defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad. with inputs from Mushtaq Ahmad
