Srinagar: A BJP MLA, who has been charged with murder in the 2008 Kishtwar religious riots, took oath as a minister on Monday.
Sunil Kumar Sharma, who took oath of office for the second time, is a BJP MLA from Kishtwar.
Sharma was a minister in the coalition government during late Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s tenure.
Following the infamous riots in Kishtwar, a Special Investigating Team (SIT) was constituted on August 9, 2013 by the J&K Director General of Police, which booked hundreds of people for rioting, arson, loot and murder of three people. As per the details available, Kishtwar police registered an FIR 133/2008 in the August 12, 2008 riots. Sharma was named as an accused along with several others for various offences including murder, arson, loot and violation of curfew in the town.
The police report says that Sharma was a member of the group that had attacked Muslims, killing two persons, Bashir Ahmed Moochi and Lassa Khanday and leaving several others injured. The third person killed during the riots was identified as Arvind Raj Baghat.
