Srinagar: In a broad daylight, a group of three militants affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba attacked a CRPF vehicle at Pampore on Srinagar-Jammu highway on Saturday at 4:20pm.
Two CRPF men including Head Constable Driver R K Rana and head-constable Bhola Singh were killed in the shootout while eight CRPF men were injured.
The militants took refuge in a nearby spacious government EDI building on the highway. More than a hundred EDI employees, students and prospective entrepreneurs were inside the building when the attack took place.
The employees said that they saw at least three militants entering the premises and asking them to move out of the building. The militants reportedly told them that armed forces, not civilians, were their targets.
Police launched an evacuation operation and rescued civilian to safety. However, an employee Abdul Gani of Pulwama district was hit by bullet in his abdomen in the shootout.He was removed to the SMHS Hospital where he succumbed later. The slain survived by three-daughters and a wife, was laid to rest at his hometown on Sunday morning.
Two army soldiers including a captain were killed on Sunday morning when they were trying to flush-out militants from the building. A 22-year-old captain Pawan Kumar of 10 Paras and Lance Naik Omar Prakash were killed.
On Sunday afternoon, smoke billowed out of the too floor of the EDI building where the militants have taken position since yesterday. Entire area has been sealed off by forces and the traffic has been diverted to other routes.
As the operation is underway, scores of people in spite of the Police advisory blocked the highway and clashed with the government forces in several parts of the town today. Two youth were hit by bullet after after forces tried to disperse them.
