12 timber smugglers surrender in Baramulla

Baramulla: At least 12 persons having timber smuggling cases registered against them in this north Kashmir district surrendered before police on Friday.
They surrendered before sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Rafiabad, Shabir A Khan, in presence of district forest officer (DFO) concerned and deputy director forest protection force Rafiabad.
“First preference will be given to rehabilitating these persons by providing them means of livelihood,” the SDPO told reporters. “Preference would be given to their appointment as special police officers whenever recruitments take place next.”
In the past few months, police and Forest Protection Force have tightened noose on forest smugglers.
The DFO termed the surrender as a “unique moment”. “These smugglers have come with their own consent. The Forest department would accommodate them as daily-wagers in future,” he said.
