Pulwama remains shut on third day over civilian killings

PULWAMA: A complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama and adjoining townships for the third consecutive day on Wednesday against the killing of a LeT militant and two civilians by government forces on Sunday.
Danish Farooq Mir , an engineering student and Shaista Hamid, a postgraduate student, were killed after government forces opened fire on people protesting during the encounter, in which a local LeT militant Adil Ahmad Shergojri was killed while his two associates managed to escape.
The civilian killings triggered massive protests and clashes in the area and a complete shutdown across the Valley on the call of pro-freedom leaders on Monday. However Pulwama, Samboora, Kakpora and Ratnipora townships observed a complete shutdown for the third day today in protest against the civilian killings.
All shops, business establishments, private offices and coaching centers remained shut while passenger traffic stayed off the roads. However, there were no reports of clashes from the district. Meanwhile, people from different villages of the district continued to throng the homes of the slain militant and the two civilians to express sympathy with the families.
