Div Com reviews status of sericulture

SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon Friday chaired a meeting to review the progress of Sericulture and Silk Industry across valley.
He directed officials to work for the betterment of the farmers. He said that there was a massive gap between the market and the farmers which was taking toll on the sector.
He emphasized the need for overall development of Sericulture and Silk Industry with special focus on post cocoon sector, silk cocoon production and productivity, value addition, dissemination of technologies and adopting cluster approach. Director Sericulture, J&K, officials from Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute Pampore, officials from Union Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MMSE) other officers of State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO), Sericulture Development Department, farmers and businessmen attended the meeting.
Director Sericulture apprised the meeting about the various initiatives taken by the Department to bring noticeable improvement in cocoon production and productivity.
He said with the technical and financial support from the Central Silk Board, a comprehensive plan to increase silk productivity has been formulated. He said that the latest production technological inputs, new mulberry and silk worm varieties are slated to be introduced to improve silk trade here.
