5 Kashmiri women who won’t let you forget Kunan-Poshpora mass rape

SRINAGAR: Five young Kashmiri women have worked relentlessly for three years to comprehensively document one of the worst crimes against humanity committed by the Indian armed forces in the Valley: the mass rape of more than 30 women in Kunan-Poshpora villages of Kupwara in 1991.
The fruit of their labour, ‘Do You Remember Kunan-Poshpora’, was recently a topic of discussion at the Jaipur Literary Festival that concluded last week.
On February 23, 1991, an unspecified number of soldiers gang-raped the women, some of them old, during a search operation in Kunan and Poshpora villages.
In what has been termed as travesty of justice, a delegation led by a senior journalist, BG Verghese, which was sent to investigate into the incident, cleared the soldiers of the charges.
The State Human Rights Commission had recommended a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to 34 victims and action against the officials who had closed the case in 1991.
In 2013, a group of 50 women, including the five authors, filed a fresh petition in the high court seeking reopening of the mass rape case.
The first chapter of the book, Kashmiri Women and Resilience, documents the story of the authors and their motivation for writing the book.
The chapter two, Sexual Violence and Impunity, written by Natsaha Manzoor, documents how the state has used rape as a weapon of war.
The third chapter, The Night in Kunan-Poshpora, written by Munaza Rashid, gives the details of the case. The fourth chapter, Life in Kunan-Poshpora, throws light on how the rape survivors are living with the realities of life.
The fifth, Inquiries and Impunities, written by Samreen Mushtaq, talks about the cover-ups and distortions by the state, and the last chapter, People Who Remember, written by Ifra Bhat, comprises how a journalist, local residents and some other people remember the incident.
The last chapter, The Legal Battle, written by Essar Batool, is based on the legal history of the case.
The authors say Indian civil society’s selective outrage over incidents of rape in Kashmir and elsewhere was one of the main motives that led them to document Kunan-Poshpora mass rape.
“We saw how Indian civil society led high-octane protests against rape and murder of Nirbhaya in New Delhi in 2012 and how it maintained silence over the biggest rape of women in Kunan-Poshpora in Kashmir. A rape is a rape irrespective of the place where it is committed. Since there was no history of the Kunan-Pospora rape case, we decided to document it,” said Ifra Bhat.
The authors—three are social workers, one a student and the fifth a lawyer—said the hardest part was to convince their families about the endeavour.
“They said it is never a good idea to take up the cudgels with the state,” said Essar Batool.
“My sister told me once that I can become victim of the same crime if I persisted with it. But I was determined and today all of them are proud,” she added.
The book, published by Zubaan Publications, is set to be released in Srinagar on the 25th anniversary of Kunan-Poshpora mass rape on February 23.

The mass rape was committed on Kashmiri Women at a time when Militancy was at its Peak and every Kashmir i Muslim was dubbed as Anti National and a Militant. The rape was committed through Army to take revenge and terrorise Kashmir Muslims. Entire Government and Civil Establishment turned a Blind Eye and Deaf Ears towards the Crime. Few Human Rights Activists did raise their Voice but the same was lost in Din. The Army being armed with Armed Forses Sepecial Powers Act , went UN touched. This was and shall remain irony of Fate.

A rape is still a rape. No matter what the post of person is or status of the person, male or female victims should get justice.

INDIA is a construct. It now has to exist. Kill or be killed. Not even one percent of the ‘educated INDIAN’ population is going to understand or want to understand this. Let it be. This too shall pass.

The entire episode was shameful and unbecoming of Indian army. But, i believe what preceded that, the whole ethnic cleansing episode of Kashmiri pandits was equally shameful and unbecoming of Kashmiri ethos. While no act of violence should go unnoticed, people only choose to highlight those that were done against them. Genocide in any form must be regretted by one and all.

No act of Violence should go unnoticed or unpunished even if the state is the perpetrator. All such acts should be condemned and survivors should be given justice. A commendable effort by the women to document such atrocious incident and bring it to public notice.

Utterly false charges. Those were the times when subversion of the population was at its peak. Successive enquires have proved that nothing of this sort happened. It just another of those tactics to defame and demonise the Army. Will somebody write about the atrocities committed by terrorists on the masses.

Mr Vbsays…you are falsely blaming without knowing the reality, i was born in the same year the exodus of Kashmiri took place but afterwards while i was growing up, many of our neighbors (kashmiri pandits) and some born as i was and my close friends still live with us in Kashmir but none was killed by any militant, none was raped and nobodies property was confiscated…as it is common saying here in Kashmir (Both Muslims and non-Muslims) that the exodus of KP’s was a planned affair (By then governor jagmohan and PM narsima rao) to later justify any human rights violation, killings of innocents, custodial disappearances etc and to give reasonable and unbiased Indians a notion that Kashmirs are pro Pakistanis and traitors…..Come to Kashmir and see it yourself. Don’t make false accusations man…Dont be pro-RSS and don’t play in the hands of communal forces…….

Mr Vbsays, Most of the shameful activities were committed by Indian Army. Do you support them. For example mass killing of Kashmiri Pandiths at Wand-hama Ganderbal was also committed by These people and blamed to Terrorists as witnessed by A boy who escape from the spot but when he declared the same in front of the then HM his voice was ignored and latter he disappeared no body has whereabouts.

@MD Shah Peddling in lies, half truths and conspiracy theories are hall marks of the radicalised lot.what really happend was this, According to the testimony of one of the survivors of the incident, a 14-year-old Hindu boy named Vinod Kuman Dhar, the gunmen came to their house dressed like Indian Army soldiers, had tea with them, waiting for a radio message indicating that all Pandit families in the village had been covered. After a brief conversation they rounded up all the members of the Hindu households and then summarily gunned them down with Kalashnikov riflesThe massacre was allegedly committed by Abdul Hamid Gada of Hizbul Mujahideen and was timed to coincide with the Shab-e-Qadar, the holiest night of the month of Ramzan, when believers stay awake until dawn. Gada was subsequently shot dead by Indian security forces in 2000

No sane person will contribute to such concocted writings which are meant only to kindle separatist ideals. Terrorists from inside and outside, have and can do such heinous crimes if at all done. The act has already been proved false by law. How can you distinguish between a soldier and a terrorist, when the man in front, is disguised in a soldier’s attire. These are all to defame and demoralise Indian polity. Let these ladies write on what terrorists are doing worldwide, so that the innocent kasmiris will shun terrorism and will move in the path of prosperity.

Many Kashmiri militants, and Pakistani intruders and terrorists camouflage with Indian army uniform to do all kind of atrocities on their own people so that a hatred can be created, this is the tactics given by the Pakistan army to Hijbul Mujhadeen. Those five woman who were gang raped are non other than Hijbul Mujhadeen who wear Indian army uniform, this is the bitter truth.

Big JIHADI fighters with chicken hearts are hiding behind the shield of kids ? No mass rapes are done by INDIAN Forces in KASHMIR and would never be done in FUTURE as well .Kindly check your information onGOOGLE yes mass rapes and forced conversions did happen to the KASHMIR women folk during the time of MUSLIM Invaders like Mohammad Gauri , Mohamad Ghaznavi , Ahmad Shaw Abdali ,Nadir Shaw, Babur and Aurangzeb but during 17 TH century onwards the SUKH GURUS sacrificed their lives to protect KASHMIR folks ,

If u love pakistan so much they go there and live. No u will not go since they themselves are going to destroy soon. You use our money and resources and lick foots of enemy country. Y no such incidents took place during the time on Congress . Cos they were sheltering these terrorists. These allegations are well planned by the Kashmir based pakistanis. These incidents do took place but on Kashmiri pandits. They were forced to leave there homes by Mujahedin. These people are anti national in disguise. And now they will be getting what they deserve.
