Kupwara villages demonstrate against militants’ killing

Baramulla: Hundreds of people from Dardpora, Hayatpora, Dewar, Sogam, Lalpora villages in Kupwara clashed with government forces that tried to stop them from protesting over the killing of three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants.
The militants were killed during an operation that started on Friday. Two of the militants were buried in a local graveyard on Saturday night, while LeT commander Abu Usama was laid to rest on Sunday morning. Tens of hundreds of people attended their funeral and those who had missed the funeral prayers offered these in absentia today.
After the prayers, the mourners demonstrated on streets and attacked Lalpora police station with stones. The forces fired teargas canisters and used baton charge to chase away the protesters.
The protesters said the forces had not allowed them to take photos of the slain militants and forced them to bury the deceased during the night.
Shabir Ahmad, a protester, said, “We suspect they might have killed civilians.”
