1 killed, 2 injured in avalanche at Machil

BARAMULLA: A 16-year-old boy was killed and two others injured in an avalanche in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Mehraj-u-Din Khan, son of Bashir Ahmad Khan of Chuntawari, Machil, and two of his classmates—Javid Ahmad Khan (14), son of Mohammad Younis khan, and Abdul Rashid Mir (13), son of Abdul Rehman Mir—were on way to their madrassa when the avalanche hit the area.
Mehraj-u-Din died on the spot, while the two others were rescued and shifted to a hospital.
Machil and other high-altitude areas of the Valley experienced heavy snowfall in the past two days. About two to four feet snow was received in high-altitude areas, especially in the frontier areas.
On Friday evening, the authorities issued an avalanche warning that was to remain in effect from 5pm Friday to Saturday 5pm. The people in Kupwara and three other districts were advised not to venture out in avalanche-prone areas.
