ANANTNAG: A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed in an encounter with government forces in Kokernag area of Anantnag district on Tuesday, police said.
After being informed by their sources about the presence of militant/militants in Khalihar village, the forces had laid siege to the village last night.
At about 4am this morning, an official said, the militant opened fire and tried to escape but was gunned down in retaliatory fire.
Since civilians have no access to the site of gunfights, it is not possible to verify independently the exact sequence of such encounters.
The deceased militant was later identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Haroo alias Adil of Pushwara, Khanabal.
The slain militant had joined militant ranks eight months ago.
“Earlier he was associated with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and had recently joined Lashkar-e-Toiba,” the police officer said.
Soon after the gunfight ended, tens of hundreds of people from various villages rushed to the militant’s native village. His body was carried to the local graveyard for burial in a huge procession amid anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Soon after his burial, mourners threw stones at government forces in Nathpora area of Khanabal. During the clashes, which continued for hours, two policemen sustained injuries after being hit by stones. The police fired dozens of teargas canisters to chase away the protesters.
Army and police had last month circulated the name and picture of the slain in the posters of ‘wanted militants’.
