JANUARY 26: ‘Kashmir turned into a police state’

SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (M) on Monday condemned the “harassment and detention” of people ahead of January 26, saying, “Kashmir Valley has been converted into a police state”.
“Harassing people and detaining innocent civilians in the name of security arrangements and law and order measures is deplorable and condemnable,” a Hurriyat (M) spokesman said in a statement issued here.
“Government has given a free hand to forces in various areas of old Srinagar, and they are indulging in atrocities, using excessive force on civilians, conducting arrests, and detaining people at will. Firing tear gas shells in densely-populated areas has resulted in number of women falling unconscious,” he said.
The spokesman said there was no justification for the massive presence of government forces around the historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta, Srinagar.
“It creates an atmosphere of fear and scare in the entire area,” he said.
