HCJK flays ‘police crackdown’ on Shah, others

SRINAGAR: Police on Friday arrested Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir (HCJK) leader Shabir Ahmad Shah along with his associates as soon as he stepped out of his Sanat Nagar residence and barred him from visiting Pakharpora area in central Kashmir.
“Besides Shah, police also detained Muhammad Yasin Ataai while as Nayeem Ahmad Khan was put under house arrest,” a statement issued by the pro-freedom amalgam said.
According to the statement, police also detained Muhammad Yusuf Naqash and lodged him in police station, Safa Kadal and raided the houses of Mushtaq ul Islam and Farooq Ahmad Dar (Bitta Karatey).
“The leaders were scheduled to visit Hardo Shewa Sopore and Pakharpora as part of election boycott campaign,” the statement added.
The HCJK spokesperson while terming the curbs as undemocratic and autocratic questioned the functioning of democracy in the state “where government takes out rallies to demand votes from people but is restricting the activities of its political opponents and preventing them from meeting the people?”
“People of Kashmir have become well aware of the dual nature of so-called democratic government who are staging the election dramas here to give a democratic colour to their forcible occupation and to prevent itself from the embarrassment at international level,” the statement added.
