Srinagar: Family of a Kashmir University student detained in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 2005, Mohammad Rafiq Shah, Monday said that he has been “attacked and seriously injured” in an attack on him by “criminal elements” in the jail.
“The jail authorities have given the assailants free hand to attack our son and other Kashmiri detainees,” a local news agency, KNS, quoted the family sources as saying.
“Besides him, other Kashmiri inmates have also been attacked inside Tihar jail and no serious efforts have been taken from the authorities so far to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” they said.
“The jail authorities are acting like a mute spectator and are not acting to prevent these attacks,” they added.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani while condemning the attack on Kashmiri detainees in Tihar jail has said that “such acts shall not be tolerated at any cost.”
“Government has given criminal elements inside the Tihar jail a freehand to unleash terror on Kashmiri youth,” Geelani said.
“The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Amnesty International (AI) and other international human rights organizations must look into the matter and take cognizance of these issues,” Geelani told KNS over phone from New Delhi.
