SRINAGAR: A landslide-triggered breach in a local power canal flooded Gund village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, damaging dozens of residential houses.
At least 12 houses were damaged in New Colony locality of Gund village in Kangan on Tuesday night when a breach in the local power canal due a landslide flooded the village.
Eyewitnesses said people left their houses amid chaos and ran for cover. The water level in the village started increasing soon after the breach in the canal while no government official came to the rescue of the villagers.
The residents were scared after they witnessed two houses collapsing within no time. At least 12 houses were damaged due to the flood. Locals alleged that the concerned MLA did not respond to their repeated phone calls and they spent whole night in open air.
The houses of Abdul Qadir Lone, Ghulam Muhammad Lone, Abdul Gani Lone, Ghulam Muhammad Raina, Abdul Hamid Lone, Ghulam Ahmed Kumar, Shamsudin and Bashir Ahmed Raina were completely damaged.
Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Sarmad Hafeez accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal and other officers, visited the area to take stock of relief and rehabilitation operation. The Deputy Commissioner also visited avalanche-prone and other vulnerable spots along the canal and directed the Power Development Corporation authorities to take immediate measures to avoid such accidents in future.
