Corporal punishment: Pvt schools’ body seeks probe into video

Srinagar: A private schools’ body here has demanded a probe by government into a video purportedly showing a minor student being harassed by some teachers in a classroom.
The video, which has gone viral on the Internet apparently shows a wailing child in a dimly-lit classroom asked to recite at fast pace some elementary lessons by teachers, not seen in the frame.
Jammu and Kashmir Private Schools United Front (JKPSUF) demanded immediate inquiry into the video.
“We are highly disturbed by those videos that have surfaced on social media like Facebook and Youtube and in which students appear to be undergoing torture,” General Secretary of the front G N Var said in a statement.
Var said the Department of Education should immediately investigate these videos and identify the culprits, whether they in private or government sector.
“We demand that the teachers be appropriately punished for subjecting children to such a treatment,” he said.
The video is more than a month old as schools in Kashmir broke off for winter vacations on December 1 last year and will reopen only in first week of March. It was also not clear whether the school was private or government run.
