Baramulla quarry owners protest against administration order to stop extraction

BARAMULLA: Dozens of stone quarry owners of Drangbal area here Monday staged protests against the district administration move to stop the operations of their stone quarries.
The owners said that district administration on Monday called them to Tehsil officer Baramulla and asked them to stop the extraction in the quarries located within Kacharaie lands.
Khursheed Ahmad Beigh, president of Stone Quarries Association, Drangbal said that administration has ordered him to stop all the extraction works in the area. Ghulam Hassan, a quarry owner of Drangbal said, “These quarries are our only source of income and thousands people are earning their livelihood on the stone extraction, and if the government stops our work we can go to any extent and concerned administration should be its responsible.”
When contacted, Tehsildar, Baramulla, Bashir Ahmad confirmed that the stone extraction in the Drangbal area has been stopped. However, he said quarry owners have been stopped as per a Supreme Court order.
“I received directions from Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir vide No
DIVCOM/RA-AVS/355/11/2013 dated 14-12-2013 that directed me to implement the judgment of Punjab High Court passed in case titled ‘Jagpal
Singh and others versus state of Punjab and others in AIR 2011 SC 1123’ directing the concern authorities to ensure the stopping of all stone quarries which are in operation within ‘Kahcharie land,” Ahmad said.
